Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

We attracted and addressed our audience by the use of, editing, sound and camera work.

We have used the use of sound to help attract/address our audience of the horror genre which our film is based on. This was achieved by using music that was dark and suspense building. This was because  the tension needed to be high seeing as our genre is horror. Music like this is typically used in horror films in order to build up tension as well as allowing the audience to realise something bad could be about to happen. We felt as a group music is an important part of our opening sequence as this is what attracts and keeps the audience interested.

We also attracted our audience by researching a couple of horror movies and found out what was most popular and common to be included in these movies. For example something small going wrong which foreshadowed the crisis there would be later on, appeared very often. This is why we decided to have our main character trip over and lose the dog, which led to her finding the abandoned house.

Furthermore, something else that was very popular in horror movies was some sort of cliffhanger that would leave the audience asking questions and wanting to find out more. For this reason, at the end of our opening sequence left it with the girl entering the abandoned house and the door slamming shut on her on its own. We left our opening sequence on this cliffhanger to build suspense and tension for the rest of the movie.

The use of editing also helped to attract and address our audience. This was because at the beginning of our film we kept the cuts very slow and had long takes as the girl was walking the dog. However, when she trips over and loses the dog, the cutting rate begins to increase which highlights the panic of the situation. Moreover, it foreshadows how something bad is about to happen and sets the audience on edge as they can sense this as well. When the girl follows the sound of the dog barking to the abandoned house the camera work is judders frequently to display how something is not quite right with the house and to frighten the viewer even further.

In conclusion, we have attracted and addressed our audience our audience through the use of, editing, sound and camera work. We also used research to ensure that we were addressing the correct audience otherwise there would have been a lot of confusion. Furthermore, this ensured that we had a good understanding of the different features of horror films and so be able to attract our audience correctly.
